Here is a rendition of my RPG character called, "Knight Raven". A mysterious Batman/Crow type vigilante that seems to possess strange powers, which he uses to "hunt" crime on the mean streets of the city. The RPG game we play is the older "Villains & Vigilantes" and the campaign is the "The Night of the Garrote" from the "Alone in the Night" module. We've expanded on the original story to make it a longer story arc.

"Alone Into the Night" is a book of three short scenarios for play by a Gamemaster and one hero using the Villains and Vigilantes rules system. All three scenarios are best suited to a modern day campaign, but are quite adaptable and could be set in virtually any time period that the GM's campaign might be set in. Among the adventures there are varying levels of difficulty which make them suitable for play by heroes of differing levels, as described at the start of each adventure.

The first adventure is entitled The Night of the Garrote and is a daring murder mystery in which the player-hero must match wits with both the GM and the elusive Garrote, whoever he might be. (This is the adventure that we are playing)

Troubleshooter is our second adventure, which involves the hero carrying on the work of a murdered crime reporter.

Finally, the hero must journey to Canada where a madman is hatching an insidious plot to control the country. Are your fists powerful enough? Is you will strong enough? We shall soon see when the action never stops in Dominion Day.

***At some point in the future I plan on redoing this character, I'm not exactly happy with his appearance yet.

and here is the wallpaper banner I photoshopped using the "Garrote" character by Patrick Zircher from V&V module "Alone in the Night" and the background from the photograph, "Chicago_2" by Eugene Feygin.

For those not familiar with Villains & Vigilantes, it was a superhero role-playing
game back from the period of the 80's and in my opinion the best version of the game.
"The Night of the Garrote" was written by Kent Paling and Ken Cliffe, and it came out
in a V&V module called, "Alone in the Night". It was intended to be three adventures
for one or two players and not a group. The story features the return of prolific
costumed serial killer from the 1930's, during the period of the Great Depression,
called the "Garrotte".

The Garrotte murdered several persons without remorse, and leaving his trademark copper
pennies on the victim's eyes. His reign of terror went unchecked for some time, as police
had limited clues to go on. None of the victims seemed to have any connection, other than
who had killed them. The killer was dubbed, "the Jack the Ripper of the Great Depression"
and continued to menace the city. That is, until one night, a police officer on patrol,
came across the killer and shot him as he escaped into the night.

For some though, the The Garrotte legacy is one of dark secrets, corruption, and death.
Local legend says that the "Garrotte" was seen at the construction site of the old Mayfair
Insurance company, the night he was shot. The dark figure was seen stuffing something into
the cornerstone of then still drying cement before sneaking off. The Garrotte was never
seen again and the case was closed years later. The files gathering dust at the town archives.

That is until the announcement that the Mayfair Building would be demolished to make room for a new mall.
The development brought the old case in the forefront of the public's mind and
couriousity abounded, with the press speculating on might be found in the cornerstone, the
"time capsule"...

Knight Raven

"But the raven, sitting lonely on the placid bust, spoke only
That one word, as if his soul in that one word he did outpour.
Nothing further then he uttered - not a feather then he fluttered
Till I scarcely more than muttered, "other friends have flown before
On the morrow he will leave me, as my hopes have flown before."
Then the bird said, "Nevermore."
~Edgar Allan Poe, "The Raven"

The Knight Raven was once the scourge of crime in the city,
during the Prohibition Era of the 1920s and 1930s. In 1933,
the brooding hero encountered the fearsome Garrotte in the
bowels of Hell's Kitchen. He and other costumed heroes of
the time began to unravel the secret of the Garrotte, before
the dark hero found his life cut short in one of the Garrotte's
sinister traps.

The Knight Raven, aka Leonard Davenport, was laid to rest by his
family a week after his murder. They concealed the fact that Leonard
was Knight Raven, in a trunk of his personal effects, including the
Knight Raven costume.

Present Day
------------
After returning home from several years of service in the
military. Alexander Davenport, would inherit the family's
humble estate and discover his Grandfather's legacy. At the
time, the Carelli Crime Family was trying to take control of
the rackets in the city. This included their legitimate business
connections as well, including Davenport shipping. The Davenports
had a long outstanding tradition of running a clean operation,
until the Carelli's bought shares within the company. The Carelli's
also used strong arm tactics when diplomacy failed. They had the
mayor, the chief of police, and several other political figures in
their pocket. Having financed their bids for re-election thru
dummy companies and organizations, they're generous donations were
hard for most to turn away.

The Davenports sued the Carelli's in court, but found the case
tied up in "Red Tape" for months...Perhaps years. Having exhausted
their legal resources, Alexander decided on a new approach. Modifying
his grandfather's costume, he donned it and became the new "Knight Raven".
To bolster this endeavor, he equipped the suit with state-of-the-art
technology that increased his strength and allowed him to fly. He carried
many gadgets that he paid top dollar for from around the world. This
combined with his brooding image of the Raven, known from Shakespeare's
MacBeth as an "Herald of Misfortune".

Created using Fabrica. "Knight Raven" is inspired by several characters such as Batman, Nighthawk, Night Owl, etc.

***Note: With the return of the Garrotte from seemingly beyond the grave, Alexander hopes to capture the villain to have him face justice for murdering his grandfather so many years ago.

The Answer Man

"A bird doesn't sing because it has an answer,
it sings because it has a song."
~Lou Holtz

As a boy, young Chester Applegate was a bright as bright could be. He seemed
to know everything and loved learning new things to add to that repository of
knowledge. Although he was very smart, he was not very athletic, and often
had trouble keeping up with games such as basketball or even tag. As he got
older he found himself spending more and more time in library, reading books
well into the late weekend afternoons. He preferred his books to people, and
often shunned human contact. That is, until he met Sarah. She opened his eyes
to the world around him and taught him a lesson in love. They married in college,
and later moved to the city, where Chester could be closer to his work at a
fact checking company for a major book publisher. He and Sarah had many fine
years together until one fateful day...Their car exploded...Killing Sarah
and injuring Chester. He lost his right eye that day and the love of his life.

For months he was inconsolable, until he learned that the car bombing was the
result of organized crime. The car bomb as it turns out was intended for someone
else with a simliar car to Sarah's. A botched hit. Unable to get the police to
take any sort of productive action, Chester did some investigation on his own.
He found out how the crime syndicate was laundering money in the city and was
able to trace it to its souce, down by the docks. Realizing that he wasn't up
physically to the demands of the investigation, he began to work out and take
self defense classes. To protect his friends and family, he donned a costume
when he went out. To give him advantages over his opponents, he invested in
gadgets he was able to purchase online. He was able to afford these by stealing
the mob's money. Before long, Chester had stolen millions of dollars from the
mob. In addition, he would get information and secretly pass it along to the
police for further investigation and later prosecution. Chester was the man
who had an answer for everything, and they called him, "The Answer Man"

Vanilla Rose

"I'm so spoiled - I must have a Starbucks vanilla latte every day."
~Katie Holmes

Born with strange, wonderous powers...Young Gail Rose or "Vanilla" as her
friends called her, could move faster than anyone could blink. She was
diagnosed as being a mutant, with the ability to control her kinetic energy;
In this case, her power manifested itself as super speed.

She hid this ability from others, except her family. This enabled her to
enjoy a fairly normal life. Later as she entered her teens, Gail used her
powers to help others as needed. Now as a young adult, she's seeking to prove
herself. To do this, she has volunteered to join the hunt for the elusive and
deadly Garrotte.

She-Tiger

“O tiger's heart wrapped in a woman's hide!”
~William Shakespeare

Jarella Regit was an prominent geneticist trying to map the genome of several
large cats, in particular rare breeds of tigers. Although she was highly
motivated to save the species, she was also interested in enhancing the human
species. Jarella imagined creating a race of cat people, leaving war behind
and embracing a more natural, instinctive level of consciousness. After nearly
a year of exhaustive work, she was successful in isolating the traits in the
tiger's genome. Using an experimental procedure for splicing DNA, she spliced
her DNA with that of the tiger. She was wrought with pain for several hours
as a startling change occurred within her. When the lab assistants found
her, she was unconscious. The facility's administrators reviewed her notes
and she was fired for improper use of the lab's equipment. She was remanded
to the custody of the state and sent for psychiatric evaluation. Frustrated
by the thought of her old bosses using her research without any consideration
for her, she underwent her final change into the...Savage She-Tiger!

Escaping from the authorities, she was on her own for a while. Learning her
new abilities, but at the same time learning to control her new instincts to
hunt. She was implicated in a Were-Wolf attack in the area, but was later
able to clear her name. She-Tiger worked solo for a while, using her hyper
senses to locate missing persons or helping others out in the community.
Despite all she's done, she wants to prove herself, restore her credability,
and hopefully get funding to further her genetics research. To do this, she's
joined forces with the authorities in tracking down the murderous Garrotte,
who is back from the grave after several decades.

Quarterback

“Sure, luck means a lot in football.
Not having a good quarterback is bad luck.”
~Don Shula

Growing up as a boy in the Bronx, Tatum Manning, dreamed of one day
becoming a pro-football Quarterback. He practiced every day and worked
out to get himself into shape. When he entered high school, he made the
football team and pushed himself to the limit. Highly respected by his
coach and teammates, Tatum was considered by many to be a role-model for
everyone. His team was successful and they went to the Regionals; however
as much as he tried he was only a linebacker on the team. He wanted more,
he wanted to be that Quarterback leading his team to victory. In the fall
of his senior year, he got that chance. With the quarterback and the
back-ups on the injured list, the coach called in Tatum to QB. With his
leadership and positive attitude, he lead the team to victory.

Tatum moved onto college football and eventually made pro for the Giants.
He seemed to be a mover and shaker, with all kinds of commercials and
labels. However, his dream was cut short when a leg injury sidelined him.
The leg bone was broken in three places, and the team doctor feared that
Tatum would never be able to play the game again. For a year, Tatum was
sidelined and worked thru physical therapy. But no matter how hard he
pushed himself, his leg would not heal properly.

One day, he received a visit from the mysterious "Crimson Sky". A mysterious
superhero reknown in that part of the country for solving crimes. Sky himself
had been injured at one point, and had cybernetic replacements put in. Sky
offered to put Tatum in touch with the doctors who had helped him. Tatum
agreed, and bionics were surgically implanted in his injured leg. The bionics
helped him to walk and run again, however the National Football League would
not allow him to play again. The bionics were an "Unfair Enhancement", and
thus he could not be accepted. Devastated, Tatum decided eventually to undergo
further augmentation to be able to partner with "Crimson Sky", as the superhero
"Quarterback". Now Tatum's living a new dream!

And one more for the day....

Crimson Sky

“Often the hands will solve a mystery that
the intellect has struggled with in vain.”
~Carl Gustav Jung

Not much is known about the origin of the mysterious Crimson Sky. What is know is
mentioned in whispers, often in the back of restaurants or in bars over a cold
beer. They say he's a Native American from the Sioux tribe, that lost his arms
in an railroad accident. His arms replaced by Cybernetic ones, that give him
inhuman strength. In addition, Red Sky, is well versed in magics and the super-
natural...Often helping local authorities in such matters. Sky's eyes are enough
to haunt a man's soul, particulary if that man has committed some crime. Crimson
Sky's status with local authorities is a positive one now, but at one time he
seemed indifferent to the ideas of law and justice. With the return of the
Garrotte, Red Sky emerges from the shadows to hunt this unholy killer who
stalks the citizens of the city.
