Amazon

"No one can resist the golden lasso.
It binds all who are encircled and compels them to tell...
the truth!"

Princess Ororo of Themyscira was born Ororo was a metamutant who nearly drowned as a child,
but was rescued by Queen Hippolyta of the Amazons. Hippolyta raised young Ororo as an Amazon
princess beside her own daughter Diana(who as a child was very jealous of her new "sister",
on the island of Themyscira. As Ororo grew up, she displayed the ability to control the weather,
and the Amazons taught her how to focus her powers into a lasso of lightning that would compel
anyone bound by it to speak the truth. She eventually left her island home to enter "Man's World"
as "Wonder Woman", to use her abilities to help people.

"It's Clobberin Time!"

Caught in the throes of a Cosmic Storm in Earth's atmosphere, test pilot Ben Grimm's ship
was damaged and collided with a small strange alien vessel. Ben lost control of his ship and it fell to Earth.
Forced to crash land in the desert, Ben Grimm, lay in the open for hours as the strange radiation his body
absorbed slowly changed his body into stone...Which Ben's hand was resting on as he lay unconscious.

Not long after his tranformation, Grimm found himself wandering into town looking for help. Thinking he
was some kind of monster, the towns people ran away from him and called the authorities. Later on the run,
he would be inducted into the X-Patrol. A team made up of mega-mutants.

Green Lantern Hulk

"In brightest day, in blackest night,
No evil shall escape my sight
Let those who worship evil's might,
Beware my power...The Incredible HULK's might!

Due to an accident in Earth's orbit, Abin Sur was forced to crash land on Earth. The experience wounded him
mortally forcing him to seek a successor. The ring sought out a candidate who was brave and utter fearless. In
the nearby desert, the ring found Bruce Banner/The Incredible Hulk! Battling his enemies...The Mega Leader and
the Abominable! The Ring enlarged itself and attached it to the Hulk's finger...The change was startling...The
ring combined the Hulk's and Bruce Banner's minds into one being. Now with the courage of the Hulk and the
intelligence of Bruce Banner, this new unlikely member of the Green Lantern Corps was one of the most powerful
beings in the universe...And the madder he gets the stronger he gets!

***Note: Later on, Green Lantern Hulk would learn that the X-Thing (Ben Grimm) was responsible for the accident
that killed his predecessor Abin Sur. This would lead to battles between the two that threatened to rip the world
apart.

Black Mercury

"I'm the Fastest Man Aaaaaaaaaaaalive...!"

After the cataclysm during the Infinite Amalgam Crisis, all the speeders from both
the DC and Marvel universes are annihilated, however, before their essences are lost
forever, the Speed Force absorbs them...Leading to the creation of "Black Mercury".

Black Mercury arrives in the Amalgam timeline with the youth of Wally West, the
experience of Barry Allen, the Wisdom of Jay Garrick, and the mutant genes of
Pietro Maximoff. Calling himself "Garrick", Black Mercury is not the kind of speedster
the public has seen before. Now an anti-hero determined to bring the bad guys down
to their knees. The scarlet speedsters are gone, replaced by the fastest man alive!
The Black Mercury!

Firebird

“I am what was, what is, what will be — the black angel,
Chaos-Bringer!I AM POWER!”

When the Crisis descended upon the universe, all seemed lost. Shiera Grey, Hawkgirl of
Earth rose to the occasion. A product of the love between her Thanagarian father and
her human mother from Earth, Shiera was full of spirit and fire! When the universes
threatened to collapse upon itself, she reached out to stop it. Absorbing the cosmic
energies captured in the Anti-Montior's device. Instead of being incinerated, her mutant
genes (a gift from her mother) allowed her to absorb the strange energies harbored there.
After the defeat of the Anti-Monitor, Shiera renamed herself, "Firebird" and rejoined
the X-Patrol. Over the months, her powers seemed to increase in size and strength,
leaving many to wonder if one day she could become a threat. Plagued by nightmares and
sometimes dark thoughts, Shiera Grey wonders if one day they might be right...

Aqualord the Avenging Son

"I'm king of the seven seas, Monarch of the Oceans, The Avenging Son...Imperius Rex!!!"

The man that would be known to the world as "Aqualord" was the child of an
runaway Atlantean Princess named Fen and Tom Curry, a lighthouse keeper.

Decades ago, the Kingdom of Atlantis was ruled by the fearless and strict
King Thakorr. From the capitol city of Atlantis, known as "Poseidonis",
the king and the royal family lived and ruled their people.

At that particular time, the Kingdom of Atlantis was in turmoil, with
the royal family having arranged a marriage between the Princess Fen and
the Atlantean warload Takara. Disgusted by the thought of an arranged
marriage to such a "Brute", Fen flees Atlantis with her Father's forces
in pursuit. Months pass, and Princess Fen takes refuge in "Mercy Reef"
where she is ensnaired in a fisherman's net. She is freed by Tom Curry,
a local lighthouse keeper, who responds to her cries for help. Curry cares
for Fen, and provides her with shelter, food, and safety. Months pass and
the two fall in love. They are married in a private cermony at the lighthouse
by the town's pastor. Months later they have a small child...The first known
Atlantean / Human mix. He is named "Arthur Curry" by his parents for the purposes
of legality, although the princess gives him the Atlantean name, "Orin Namor".
Fen is fearful of how other Atlanteans will receive her young son, because Orin
is born with blonde hair. Blonde hair is seen by the superstitious Atlanteans
as a sign of a curse they called "The Mark of the Kraken". Nevertheless, the
baby boy is baptized. Months would pass, and the small family lived happily
at their lighthouse home by the sea. His mother taught him all about the Kingdom
of Atlantis and his father taught him about the surface world.

During this time, the young boy begins to develop unusual abilities. He learns
to breathe underwater, swim very fast, and his physical strength seems to
increase. He also notices that he is able to communicate and command all
manner of sea life. It's later explained by Princess Fen that on the day of
his baptism, she had sprinkled Atlantean spirit water on him. This spirit water
is said to have mystical properties.

They lived peacefully for a few years, until Princess Fen's father learned of
her location from an unlikely source. Believing his daughter to have been kidnapped,
the dark hearted King Thakorr sent Atlantean warriors to retrieve his daughter,
the princess. During the attack, Princess Fen was caught in a cross fire and
killed. Tom Curry would be wounded trying to save his wife and son from the
marauding Atlanteans. These permanent injuries would force him to walk with
a limp & cane for the rest of his life. For Arthur (Orin Namor), the attack on his
father and the death of his mother would have a profound effect on the young
boy.

After completing school, Arthur decides to seek out Atlantis and learn more
about that part of his heritage. Searching the oceans of the world, he eventually
comes to the borders of the Kingdom of Atlantis. He is captured by the kingdom's
then-dictatorial government and placed in a prison camp, where he meets Vulko,
also a prisoner of the state, who teaches Arthur or Orin the language and ways
of the Atlanteans. After nearly a year of captivity, the two are able to escape
and are on the run from the Atlantean authorities. King Thakorr, unaware of Orin's
bloodline, has him branded as a criminal and enemy of the state. Meanwhile, Orin
frees many enslaved in mining camps. Once the Atlanteans learn of his royal
origin, they unite and overthrow King Thakorr.

Afterwards, Orin Namor calls himself "Aqualord" and uses his powers to save the
world's oceans from those who would seek to harm them.

I thought so too. Way back when I was a teenager, I saw a character in a Champions book that I thought had a transparent skin with water inside of him. (I was mistaken, it was a actually a character that had something like stars or planets in him (like Starbird), but the picture was in black and white. Anyways, on that day, I created Aqualord an RFG character that was like Aquaman and Namor the Submariner. Originally he was supposed to be an underwater alien character, sort of like those aliens from "The Abyss". I don't like alien characters too, so I stuck with an aquatic RPG character whose background was never really defined.

For this version of Aqualord, this is the amalgam of Namor and Aquaman. I'm still not satisfied with it, and will revisit it again and again until some day I get it right. Also for this version, he finds undersea treasure and uses it to finance a corporation called, "Oracle" just like Namor did.

sorcerous energies to atone for the misdeeds of her father.
Many men fell victim to her combination of magic and seduction.
As one of Strangefate's most trusted aides, White Witch was
sent by the doctor to capture Access. Using her feminine wiles,
the White Witch succeeded in immobilizing Access and brought
him back to Strangefate, although the doctor was not very grateful.

"Breaking news! And if you broke it, you have to pay for it.

At the Ace Chemical Plant, news reporter Kurt Ryder is anchoring
a live TV special on the career of the Jokester, starting with his
encounter with Dark Claw at the plant that ended with his life-changing
tumble into a vat of chemicals.

The Jokester, watching from above, decides to stage his own tribute to
that fateful day, entering onto the scene, dosing Ryder and his crew
with his trademark laughing gas, and then "re-enacting" his confrontation
with Dark Claw by tipping Ryder into another large vat of chemicals. Dark Claw,
having glimpses Jokester on the television, is quick to arrive at the plant
with Red Robin. While Jokester's henchmen keep them busy, Jokester occupies himself
with pushing the hapless Ryder back into the chemical soup everytime he
tries to climb out. For his finale, Jokester flushes the tank into the nearby
sewer, forcing Dark Claw to try and save Ryder, letting Jokester escape.

Ryder is lost and presumed dead, but in fact Ryder has survived, and had a
bizarre reaction to the combination of Jokester gas and the chemicals:
these two items act as a catalyst to trigger the Meta-Mutant gene in his
body. He is transformed into an extraordinarily strong and agile maniac
with yellow skin, green hair, and a rictus grin. In addition, he finds
that his hands and feet have changed, he can cling to walls, and teleport
over short distances.

Ducking into a thrift store, he assembles an equally bizarre costume,
preparing for a new career as a crime-fighter with his first target being
the Jokester! With Dark Claw's help, the two are able to apprehend the
clown menace. Dark Claw is able to develop a batch to counter attack the
tranformation, allowing the Night Creeper to appear human as Kurt Ryder.
Eventually however, Kurt Ryder learns to control the transformations
himself! Later on, he is recruited by the X-Patrol.

Vixen Wolfsbane

"All of us are God's creatures...
Just some are more creature than others."

Rahne McCabe was born a meta mutant with near uncontrollable tranformations into a
werewolf-like creature. Although, she was able to control the blood lust, she found
it became more and more difficult as time went on. Seeking a remedy to her affliction
she sought out an African medicine man who is rumored to have "Cured" other people
like her using something called the"Tantu Totem". After months of saving up for
the trip, she is at last able to meet the healer in person. The healer quickly
realizes that Rahne's condition is not an ailment at all, but part of her
meta mutant heritage. Thus, his treatment will not "cure" her. Saddened, Rahne
prepares to depart, when the village is attacked by the savage "Osebo". Osebo,
a large man-shaped talking leopard super-villain with a metal fist.

Taking possession of the Totem, Rahne McCabe's transforms into a half-human/
half-beast creature, but is able to retain her intelligence as well as many
powers of different Earth creatures. She makes short work out of Osebo and
after turning him over to the authorities heads back to the United States
to become the world's newest crime fighter. Not long afterwards, she joins
the X-Patrol.

Apollo followed Mister X when he formed the JLX from the ranks of JLA, and
aided him on his quest to find Mariner's lost home of Atlantis, a long-lost
metamutant safe-haven. During Firebird's coma, Ray met and fell briefly in
love with Madeline Pryor, the Red Queen (Firebird's twin). This affair ended
in tragedy when the Red and White Queens destroyed each other in Alice
Arcade's giant chess tournament. Apollo and Firebird travel back in time

day lead to the Age of Ra's A-Pocalypse. Apollo and Firebird return to the
Old West and encounter Generation Hex. Firebird discovers that one of the
outlaw malforms is her ancestor. The events surrounding the Armageddon Agenda
and the transformation of Firebird into Dark Firebird left Apollo in a
catatonic comatose state. Barely able to control his autonomic functions,
Apollo snaps out of it when he uses his metamutant power to absorb solar
radiation to draw the power out of Fin Fang Flame. However, Apollo mutated
even further into a bright, glowing energy being. After defeating Fin Fang Flame,

And Just in time for the 4th of July...

Spirit of '76

"I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country."
-Nathan Hale

In the latter part of the 1700's, Nathaniel Prescott was borne to a family of silversmiths
in the Colonial town of Boston. A Stone's throw, from where rule of the British would clash
with the American spirit to be free.

Nathan's father Joshua, and his older brother left Boston to join the fight in the French
and Indian War. The elder Prescott leaving the family business in the hands of his wife
Constance. Nathan would join them later when he was old enough, serving the last few years
of that war. After returning to Boston, Nathan went off to college at Harvard to study law.

Following the French and Indian War, King George III of England imposed stiff restrictions
and taxes on the American Colonies...The Stamp Act and others. This and other abuses would
lead the colonies to pursue Independence and Freedom.

Samuel Prescott, a relative of Nathan's, would be among those who would ride with Paul Revere warning the colonial towns of the approach of British troops. Nathan would later make the rides and it would be on one of these rides, that his life...And his country would be changed forever. While riding to warn Lexington of the British movements, he would be captured and charged with treason by the British. The punishment of which, was death by hanging. However, he would later escape by loosening his ropes that bound his hands together by spilling lantern oil on them. He used this oil to start a fire, which created such confusion, that he was able to escape into the night.

To cover their failure, the British officer in charge...A one Colonial William Harcourt reported
to his superiers that his officers had killed the Prescott while escaping and buried him by the
road. Later, British officers notified Prescott's relatives and searched their homes in an effort
to locate any others supporting sedition. Fortunately the family were warned ahead of time and escaped unharmed. Nathan, however was concerned that his family might come under British scrutiny again and devised a plan to thwart the British and at the same time keep his family safe.

Donning pieces of costumes from a masquerade ball, Nathan was able to fashion his costume based plays such as Faust, The Phantom of Venice, and Dante's Inferno. The intention of which was to frighten the British soldiers he encountered, to allow him time to complete his task. And frighten them he did, so well in fact, that he came to the attention of key members of the Continental Congress, and especially General George Washington.

Although most people in modern times would call this figure, "The Spirit of '76", he was known
as the "Phantom" during this period by the British and the colonists. To protect him from harm,
colonial masons constructed a shield, that would deflect the rounds fired from the British muskets and a sword was fashioned from uncommon metals and sharpened to a point where it would cut through iron. Driven by his patriotism, Prescott would light the way during some of the darkest times of the American Revolution.

***Note: This character, is sort an amalgam of the Marvel Comics character, "Spirit of '76", Captain America 1776 that Marvel did for the Bicentennial, the Phantom of Venice (costume), and other patriotic influences. I've always thought that a costumed character from the American Revolution would be an interesting idea. The Spirit of '76 carries a shield, a sword, a small flintlock pistol w/silver bullets, and two small daggers.

And some more Patriotic characters...

Steve Rogers was a scrawny fine arts student specializing in industrialization in the 1940's before America entered World War II. He attempted to enlist in the army only to be turned away due to his poor constitution. A U.S. officer offered Rogers an alternative way to serve his country by being a test subject in project, Operation: Rebirth, a top secret defense research project designed to create physically superior soldiers. Rogers accepted and after a rigorous physical and combat training and selection process was selected as the first test subject. He was given injections and oral ingestion of the formula dubbed the "Super Soldier Serum" developed by the scientist Dr. Abraham Erskine. Rogers was then exposed to a controlled burst of "Vita-Rays" that activated and stabilized the chemicals in his system. The process successfully altered his physiology from its frail state to the maximum of human efficiency, including greatly enhanced musculature and reflexes.

After the assassination of Dr. Erskine. Roger was re-imagined as a superhero who served both as a counter-intelligence agent and a propaganda symbol to counter Nazi Germany's head of terrorist operations, the Red Skull. Rogers was given a costume modeled after the American flag, a bulletproof shield, a personal sidearm and the codename Captain America. He was also given a cover identity as a clumsy infantry private at Camp LeHigh in Virginia. Barely out of his teens himself, Rogers made friends with the teenage camp mascot, James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes. Barnes accidentally learned of Rogers' dual identity and offered to keep the secret if he could become Captain America's sidekick. Rogers agreed, and trained Barnes. Roger met President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who presented him with a new shield made from a chance mixture of iron, Vibranium and an unknown catalyst. Throughout World War II, Captain America and Bucky fought the Nazi menace both on their own and as members of the superhero team the Invaders, which after the war evolved into the All-Winners Squad.
In the closing days of World War II in 1945, Captain America and Bucky tried to stop the villainous Baron Zemo from destroying an experimental drone plane. Zemo launched the plane with an armed explosive device on it, with Rogers and Barnes in hot pursuit. They reached the plane just before it took off, but when Bucky tried to defuse the bomb, it exploded in mid-air. The young man was believed killed, and Rogers was hurled into the freezing waters of either the North Atlantic. Neither his body or Bucky's were found, and both were presumed dead.

Discovery and the Avengers
The Avengers discovered Rogers' body in the North Atlantic, his costume under his soldier's uniform and still carrying his shield. Rogers had been preserved in a block of ice since 1945, which melted after the block was thrown back into the ocean by an enraged Sub-Mariner. When Rogers revived, he related his last, failed mission in the closing days of the war. Rogers accepted membership in the Avengers, and although he soon adjusted to modern times well enough to eventually assume leadership of the team, he was plagued by guilt for not being able to prevent Bucky's death. He also undertook missions for the national security agency S.H.I.E.L.D., which was commanded by his old war comrade Nick Fury.

"These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman."

For the RPG, people sometimes ask me to come up with Superheroes for them. Then generally give me a basic description of what they want their character to look like. Usually I produce one, and then several variations on that character. One such character, is the gallant "Freedom Eagle". Former American Secret Agent, turned Super Agent for the United States Government..."Have Costume...Will Travel..."

American Wonder

During the days of World War II, American Scientists strove to recreate the supersoldier serum. Many experiments failed, but one was successful...American Wonder. The daughter of an Amazon warrior and American soldier, Lauren Troy, found she was an ideal candidate for the experiment. Due to her Amazonian heritage, her body was built much tougher and the serum worked. When she awoke, she could feel the power surging through her veins. She left the lab as American Wonder!

Americat

"America's greatest strength, and its greatest weakness, is our belief in second chances, our belief that we can always start over, that things can be made better." ~Anthony Walton

During the first Iraq war, the United States again sought to find a way to make a super soldier...Seemingly the best weapon in the world that could fight terrorists. Scientists had mapped out the chromosomes of various types of felines...Cats! The army was interested in seeing if the characteristics of a cat could be imprinted on the DNA of a human. The idea being that, a man who possessed the abilities of a cat would be a major asset in battles, especially in one on one combat with terrorists. There were several experiments, but only one success. A young volunteer named Paul Venue, who was interested in pursuing a career in the military. Paul was administered the experimental treatment and was forever endowed with the abilities and instincts of a cat. Paul died that night in that lab, and would forever be known as the super patriotic Americat!
